[Facebook & Instagram Ads in 8 Steps] Lesson 4/8: A Hands On Guide to Ad Campaigns — Launching Your First Sales Ad from Zero to One!
Before we start clicking buttons, we must first understand the structure of the Facebook Ads Manager. It’s incredibly simple, with just three layers, much like a set of Russian dolls.
Before You Start: Ads Manager Structure
- Campaign: This is the outermost, main folder. At this level, you define one thing: your primary objective. As we’ve already learned, our objective is Sales.
- Ad Set: This is the middle subfolder. Here, you make three key decisions: who sees your ad (Audience), where they see it (Placements), and how much you spend (Budget).
- Ad: This is the innermost file. This level determines what the ad actually looks like (the Creative), which includes the images, videos, and text that users will see.
The Logic: A single Campaign (objective) can contain multiple Ad Sets (different audiences). Each Ad Set can contain multiple Ads (different creative assets) for testing purposes.
Now that you understand the structure, please open your computer and go to the Meta Ads Manager.
Step 1: Create the Campaign — Set Your Main Objective
- Look for the prominent green "+ Create" button and click it.
- Choose a Campaign Objective: Select Sales without hesitation and then click Continue.
- Name your Campaign: This is a crucial habit to build.
- Do not use the default name like "New Sales Campaign."
- Recommended format:
[Product Name] - [Objective] - [Date] - For example:
Neck Pillow - Sales - 20250831 - Benefit: You’ll easily identify your campaigns later when you have many of them.
- Advantage Campaign Budget (CBO): You will see an option named Advantage Campaign Budget.
- For your very first ad, strongly consider turning this off.
- This advanced feature allocates budget at the Campaign level, letting Facebook give more budget to better-performing Ad Sets. We’ll cover this later. For now, control budget at the Ad Set level to make analysis easier.
- After completing these steps, click Next.
Step 2: Create the Ad Set — Decide Who Sees Your Ad and How Much You Spend
We are now at the middle layer of our campaign.

- In the "Pixel" section, select the Pixel you have already installed.
- For the "Conversion Event," choose Purchase. This tells Facebook that our ultimate measure of success is a completed purchase.
- Budget & Schedule:
- Budget: Select Daily Budget. As a beginner, start with an amount you are completely comfortable losing, such as $10–$20 USD per day. Never invest a large sum at the very beginning.
- Schedule: Set a start date. A good practice is to schedule your campaign to begin early the next morning (e.g., 3:00–5:00 AM). This gives the ad a full day to run and allows the algorithm to learn effectively, rather than starting late in the day.
- Audience — Who You Will Target:
- Locations: Select the countries or cities you want to sell to.
- Age / Gender: Adjust based on your understanding of your ideal customer.
- Detailed Targeting: Define your audience based on interests, behaviors, and demographics.
- Click "Edit" and start typing keywords into the search box.
- Beginner strategy: Think about what your ideal customer would be interested in.
- For a "neck pillow," try interests like "office workers," "yoga," "massage," or "spinal health."
- Start by choosing 3–5 of the most relevant interests.
- Check the "Audience Definition" meter on the right. For an initial campaign, keep the estimated size in the millions to tens of millions. Don’t make it too narrow.
- Placements — Where Your Ad Will Appear:
- You’ll see two options: Advantage+ Placements (Recommended) and Manual Placements.
- For your first ad, use the recommended Advantage+ Placements.
- This authorizes Facebook to automatically show your ad across Facebook, Instagram Stories, and Reels—wherever it’s most likely to get a conversion. It’s the simplest approach and often yields the best results.
- After you have configured these settings, click Next.
Step 3: Create the Ad — Design the Creative
We have arrived at the final layer, where we create the content that users will see.
- Ad Name: Give it a clear name like
Video 1 - Blue BackgroundorImage 1 - Model Shot. - Identity: Select the correct Facebook Page and associated Instagram account.
- Ad Setup: Choose Create Ad and select Single image or video.
- Ad Creative:
- Click Add Media to upload your prepared image or video.
- Primary Text: Paste your AIDA copy from Chapter 2’s homework. See how the pieces come together?
- Headline: Write a short, powerful sentence. For example, "Say Goodbye to Neck Pain, Starting Tonight."
- Call to Action: For ecommerce, the best choice is almost always Shop Now.
- Destination:
- In the Website URL field, paste the link to your product page. Double check that it’s correct.
Final Step: Review and Publish!
- Review your setup from top to bottom.
- When ready, click the green Publish button in the bottom right.
- After publishing, your ad’s status may show Processing or In Review. This is normal and can take from a few minutes to a few hours.
- Congratulations! You’ve launched your first professional Facebook Sales ad. This is a huge milestone. Regardless of the outcome, you’ve overcome the initial fear and taken the most important step.
What Should I Do After Publishing?
Now take your hands off the mouse and make yourself a cup of tea.
Most important rule: Do not make any changes for the next three days!
- Facebook’s AI needs time to learn. This is the Learning Phase. During this time, the algorithm tests which types of people respond best to your ad.
- Any edits now will interrupt the process and force the system to start learning all over again.
In the next chapter, we’ll learn how to analyze the data like a detective after the first three days and decide what to do next.
For now, go celebrate your success!
